What is a self-driving car?

Self-driving car is an autonomous or “driverless” car, it combine sensors and software to control, navigate, and drive the vehicle. In here human drivers do not involve to take control the vehicle. Since researchers have been divided car into different layers considering autonomous situation of cars. In level 0, 1, 2 gives for normal manual cars. They consider level 3 for the car can manage all safety-critical functions under certain conditions, but the driver is expected to take over when alerted. Level 4 to the car is fully-autonomous in some driving scenarios, though not all and level 5 for the car is completely capable of self-driving in every situation.

When considering some aspects self- driving cars getting more value to our life. Considering major fact of these we can get some idea of company inventors.

Who is responsible and what are the Ethical Theories behind the above accident?

Does the company who manufactured the self-driving car responsible?

The main responsibility must be taken by the company who has done the invention, along with its engineers and other parties who have involved in manufacturing and designing this vehicle. The reason for this, can be mainly discussed using 2 ethical theories.
1. Kantianism
2. Utilitarianism

Kantianism states that when we are deciding to do something, the intention is important. And here we don’t consider about the end result. The software companies’ intention is good since they are trying to serve the community and making their day to day life easy by manufacturing self-driving cars. But, in the above incident. We can see that one of the end result is bad.

Utilitarianism states that when we are deciding to do something, the end result is important rather than the intention. So, if the software company focusses more on the end result and research about it, rather than the intention, this accident might not have happened.

The company is always responsible for the technology, software which is used in this product.

Does the owner of a self-driving car responsible?

The owner of the car is also responsible, because you have brought a self-driving car by agreeing to some terms and conditions from the manufacturing company. But this does not say that, after purchasing a self-driving car, the full responsibility is on hands of the buyer. If you do not know, what are the terms and conditions, then there might be a problem. So, it is the responsibility of the manufacturing company to clearly state the terms and conditions, when they are introducing the product to the market.

But the main burden is always comes to the manufacturing company and they should bear that.

Open for discussion ! Thank you !
